Rope Drop-Our Best Tips
The Foundation for Rope Drop: Pre-Trip Research & Planning
- Ride Intel:
- Don’t just guess which rides are popular. Dive deep! Check out wait times here. You can look at historical data based on your trip dates. This gives you real-time insights into which attractions consistently draw the biggest crowds.
- Pay close attention to ride height restrictions. If you’re traveling with little ones, knowing which rides they can access upfront will save you time and disappointment. Have your party pick their must-do rides, shows, meals, and snacks and create your touring plan during the 7 step planning process here.
Morning Strategy: Your Dollywood Kick-Off
- Map Your Path:
- Before you even step foot in the park, picture your morning. Where are those crucial rope drop spots? Which rides are the closest? Plan your initial route to cut down on unnecessary walking. Every step saved is a moment gained!
- Christmas Season Special: Santa’s List Strategy:
- If you’re visiting during Smoky Mountain Christmas and meeting Santa is a must-do, here’s a pro tip: Rope drop Country Fair! Enjoy as many Country Fair rides as you can, then head to the Santa’s List Experience line at 10:30 am. This line gets LONG later in the day! We’ve found that getting in line right as it opens, means we are often first in line. After seeing Santa, you can head back to Country Fair to finish the rides there with almost no wait.
- If you are going to take this route, consider purchasing a TimeSaver Pass, so you can still ride the headliner rides with less wait later in the day.
- Teamwork Makes the Dream Work:
- Share your morning plan with your entire group. Make sure everyone knows the first few attractions you’re targeting. This prevents those time-wasting “where are we going next?” moments and keeps everyone on the same page.

The Art of Early Arrival: More Than Just Showing Up

The “Buffer Zone”:
“Early” means arriving at the security checkpoints, not just the park gates. Factor in time for parking, walking, and security screenings. During peak seasons, these lines can be surprisingly long.
Those extra 15-20 minutes you spend waiting at the rope drop location? They’re pure gold. You’ll be ahead of the main surge of guests, giving you a significant head start.
If your family wants to ride the popular Big Bear Mountain, you can purchase preferred parking and enter the park with an advantage of being ahead of the crowd that is entering at the main gate.
The Early Morning Vibe:
Use this time to soak in the atmosphere. Dollywood has a unique charm in the early morning, with softer lighting and a sense of anticipation. It’s a great time for those crowd-free photos.
Rope Drop Strategy: Positioning & Execution
Cast Member Communication is Key:
Dollywood cast members are your best resource for up-to-the-minute information. Ask them about specific rope drop locations, any changes to park operations, and even which rides are experiencing early morning delays.
They know exactly when the rope will drop.
Strategic Positioning:
Once at the rope drop location, position yourself wisely. If you’re aiming for a specific ride, try to be near the front of the crowd heading in that direction.
If you have little ones, position yourself on a side of the crowd, so that you are not in the middle of it when the rope drops.
The “First Ride Rush”:
When the rope drops, move with purpose, but don’t run. A brisk walk is sufficient.
Use the Dollywood app to double-check wait times as you approach your first ride. If there’s an unexpected delay, pivot to the next ride on your touring plan. We make sure our ride line up is close in proximity to ensure we aren’t backtracking a lot and wasting precious early morning time.
After the first ride, keep the momentum going. Hit nearby popular attractions before the lines get too long.

Beyond the Rides: Maximizing Your Morning
- Early Morning Ambiance:
- Take a moment to appreciate the park’s atmosphere before the crowds arrive. The lighting, the music, the overall ambiance are often at their best in the early morning. This is a great time to get those amazing photos without tons of people in the background.
- Fueling Up:
- Consider grabbing a quick breakfast at a Dollywood quick-service restaurant. Early morning is the perfect time to fuel up before the lunch rush. Make sure you have enjoyed several of the most popular rides before stopping to do this though if rides are your top focus.
- Shifting Gears:
- After your morning of rides, transition to shows, crafts, and other attractions. This allows you to experience the full range of Dollywood’s offerings.
Staying Ahead of the Curve: Real-Time Adaptability

App Reliance:
The Dollywood app is your real-time command center. Keep a close eye on wait times, show schedules, and park announcements. Rides can close at any time, so you don’t want to make the trek across the park only to find out that a ride is closed if you can prevent it.
This allows you to adjust your plan on the fly and make the most of unexpected opportunities.
Cast Member Insights:
Continue to interact with cast members throughout the day. They can provide valuable tips, hidden gems, and insider information.
The Synergy of Planning and Flexibility
The true magic happens when these two elements work in harmony. Your meticulous planning provides a solid framework, while your real-time flexibility allows you to adapt and optimize your experience. This combination transforms your rope drop from a rushed sprint to a strategic and enjoyable adventure. It allows you to navigate the park with confidence, knowing that you’re prepared for whatever the day may bring. And ultimately, it’s this synergy that creates those unforgettable Dollywood memories.
