What Is Rope Drop at Dollywood?

Rope drop is the term for the official start of the day at Dollywood. Guests are typically allowed through the turnstiles before opening time and held in a designated area—usually near Mystery Mine in Wilderness Pass—until the park’s opening moment, complete with a Pledge of Allegiance and welcome announcement.

Getting to rope drop early gives you a head start on popular attractions before wait times skyrocket—but staying at a Dollywood resort supercharges this strategy.

Why Staying at a Dollywood Resort Changes Everything

When you stay at HeartSong Lodge or DreamMore Resort, you’re not just close to the park—you get a bundle of exclusive perks that give you a huge advantage at rope drop:

Early Entry with Less Chaos – Resort guests are typically more organized and ready to roll at rope drop thanks to clear transportation and park arrival times.

Free TimeSaver Wristbands – These allow you to skip regular lines on 5 attractions (but even better—Golden Hour rides don’t count against that 5!)

Golden Hour Access – Resort guests can enter select rides via the TimeSaver entrances during the first hour the park is open—even on rides that don’t offer TimeSaver later.

Complimentary Trolley to the Park – No parking stress. Just hop on the resort trolley and get dropped off at the front gate.

Resort Package Ticketing Help – The resort concierge and front desk can help resolve ticket issues and add passes easily. No need to stop at guest services at the front of the park!

Our Rope Drop + Resort Experience: A Real Timeline

We put this combo to the test on our most recent stay at HeartSong Lodge. Here’s our exact timeline:

8:37 AM – Caught the resort trolley right outside HeartSong Lodge after eating at Ember & Elm
8:46 AM – Departed for the parks (quick stop at Splash Country first)
9:04 AM – Arrived at Dollywood
9:06 AM – Entered security line
9:17 AM – Cleared security and headed toward the turnstiles
9:18 AM – Held on the bridge at the main gate
9:27 AM – Dollywood welcome and Pledge of Allegiance
9:29 AM – Turnstiles opened
**Small hiccup: Our “Bring-a-Friend” ticket didn’t scan (related to a promo issue), so we headed to Guest Services.**
9:40 AM – Ticket fixed and we entered, slightly behind the main rope drop crowd and were held at Mystery Mine rope drop point

Even with a 10-minute delay, our resort TimeSaver wristbands and Golden Hour access allowed us to CRUSH the morning

Our Rope Drop Ride Strategy (What We Got Done!)

During Golden Hour (first hour after park opening), we used the TimeSaver entrances to ride four major attractionsthree of which aren’t even included on the regular TimeSaver list later in the day.

  •  Mystery Mine – TimeSaver line at 10:02 AM
  • FireChaser Express – TimeSaver line at 10:17 AM
  • Dragonflier – TimeSaver line at 10:33 AM
  • Big Bear Mountain – TimeSaver line at 10:43 AM
  • Golden Hour ended

And here’s the best part: we still had all 5 of our TimeSaver rides left to use later in the day!

Tips for Resort Guests Using Golden Hour at Rope Drop

✔️ Know where the TimeSaver entrances are. Mystery Mine’s entrance is tucked away, so scout it in advance.
✔️ Go against the flow. Don’t follow the rope drop crowd into the regular lines—go straight to the TimeSaver queues.
✔️ Prioritize non-TimeSaver rides. Some of the most popular rides—like FireChaser and Dragonflier—don’t offer TimeSaver access later. Hit those first.
✔️ Use resort transportation. The trolley drops you off closer than general parking and is a relaxing way to start your morning.
✔️ Stay calm. If things go wrong (like our ticket glitch), the Guest Services team is fantastic and will help you get back on track quickly.

Final Thoughts: Rope Drop + Resort = Dollywood Like a Pro

Rope drop is already a smart move—but adding a stay at HeartSong Lodge or DreamMore Resort turns it into a next-level strategy. Between the TimeSaver perks, Golden Hour access, and seamless park entry, you’ll be ahead of the game before most guests have even boarded their first ride.

And best of all? You’ll have more time in your day for shows, shopping, snacks (hello, Cinnamon Bread), and soaking up the Smoky Mountain magic—with far less waiting in line.

Simply Touring Tip: If you’re debating whether the resort stay is worth it—just ask yourself what four major rides in the first hour of the day is worth to your family. For us, it was a no-brainer.
