7-Day Smoky Mountain Vacation Itinerary: The Perfect Week in Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg

But after plenty of trips to the Smokies, I have learned that the best vacations aren’t necessarily the ones where you try to squeeze everything into one week. The best trips have a little bit of everything: Dollywood thrills, great food, shopping, attractions, dinner shows, and, most importantly, some time to slow down and enjoy where you are.
For this seven-day Smoky Mountain vacation itinerary, we’re making Dollywood’s HeartSong Lodge & Resort our home base and building the week around two full days at Dollywood, a day in Gatlinburg, a Pigeon Forge adventure day and a much-needed resort day in the middle of the trip.
And yes, we’re leaving room for some of our favorite Smoky Mountain traditions along the way!
Why Stay at Dollywood’s HeartSong Lodge & Resort?
Before we get into the itinerary, let’s talk about why HeartSong makes such a great home base for a Dollywood vacation.

You can also drive if you prefer. Resort guests with valid admission receive complimentary Preferred Parking at Dollywood, which is another perk that can save both time and money.
And don’t forget about complimentary merchandise delivery. If you spend $25 or more at Dollywood, eligible purchases can be delivered back to the resort, meaning you don’t have to spend the rest of your day carrying bags around the park.

Day 1: Arrive in the Smoky Mountains & Visit The Island
The first day of vacation should be easy.
After traveling to the Smoky Mountains, check into Dollywood’s HeartSong Lodge & Resort, get settled into your room, and take some time to explore the resort.
Don’t feel like you have to hit the ground running immediately.
Once everyone is ready, head over to The Island in Pigeon Forge for an easy first evening.
The Island is a great arrival-day destination because you can stroll, shop, grab dinner, ride an attraction, or enjoy the atmosphere without committing to an entire day of activities.
This is also a great night to ride the Great Smoky Mountain Wheel, browse the shops, and let everyone pick out their first vacation treat.
The goal tonight is simple: ease into vacation mode.
Afterward, head back to HeartSong, relax, and get a good night’s sleep.
Because tomorrow is a Dollywood day.
Day 2: Dollywood – Start With Golden Hour
This is where staying at HeartSong really pays off.
Get up early, grab breakfast, and head to the HeartSong trolley lobby. You don’t have to worry about parking, finding a spot in the huge parking lot, or walking a long distance to the entrance.
The exclusive resort trolley takes you directly to Dollywood.

If you are staying at HeartSong, I highly recommend taking advantage of this perk. The first hour of the day lets you experience eligible attractions through the TimeSaver entrance before the park gets busier.
Use this morning to prioritize your must-do rides.
Ride the coasters. Knock out attractions that typically develop longer waits. Enjoy the park while the morning still feels magical and fresh.
And don’t forget to slow down along the way.
Dollywood isn’t just about roller coasters. Take time to admire the craftsmen, listen to the music, grab a cinnamon bread or one of the park’s other delicious treats, and enjoy the details that make Dollywood special.
Because this is your first full park day, stay as long as everyone has the energy for.

Day 3: Gatlinburg Shopping, Breakfast & The Village
Today we’re heading to Gatlinburg.
And we’re starting with breakfast.
You have two fantastic options depending on your family’s preference.
Option 1: Crockett’s Breakfast Camp
Crockett’s is a great choice if you’re looking for a hearty, memorable Smoky Mountain breakfast. Expect big portions, Southern favorites, and plenty of options to fuel up before a day of walking and shopping.
Option 2: Pancake Pantry
If Pancake Pantry is on your Gatlinburg must-do list, this is the perfect morning to visit. It is located right beside The Village, making it incredibly convenient for the next part of your day. The restaurant is open daily from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m., although hours can change seasonally.
Once breakfast is finished, don’t skip The Village.
The Village is one of those places that every first-time Gatlinburg visitor should experience at least once. The charming collection of shops is tucked right along the Parkway and gives you a completely different feel from the busy main strip.
Take your time walking through the shops, grab a coffee or sweet treat, and browse for those vacation souvenirs you didn’t know you needed.
From The Village, continue exploring downtown Gatlinburg at your own pace. This is a great day for souvenirs, specialty shops, and merely enjoying the energy of Gatlinburg.
And yes, make time for the candy store.
A Smoky Mountain vacation without a little candy shopping doesn’t feel complete!

Eventually, head back to HeartSong, put your feet up, and enjoy a quieter evening.
Day 4: A Resort Day at HeartSong
This is the day you will thank me for including. Don’t plan anything. Well, almost nothing.
After three busy vacation days, give your family permission to sleep in, enjoy breakfast and spend the day at HeartSong. We love having breakfast at Ember & Elm on site.
Swim. Explore the resort. Enjoy the atmosphere. Sit outside. Let the kids participate in resort activities. Have lunch or dinner at the resort.
Basically, do all the things you don’t have time to do when you’re rushing off to an attraction.
One of my biggest Smoky Mountain vacation tips is to avoid making every day an adventure from 7 a.m. until midnight.
Your vacation should actually feel like a vacation.
Use this day to recharge because tomorrow we’re going back to Dollywood.
Day 5: Dollywood – A Slower Start
Our second Dollywood day looks a little different.
We’re not rope dropping.
We’re sleeping a little later, taking our time and enjoying breakfast before heading toward the park.
And this is where one of our favorite traditions comes in: Mama’s Farmhouse.
If you’re looking for a delicious Southern meal before heading into Dollywood, Mama’s is one of our favorite choices. The restaurant serves family-style, all-you-can-eat Southern comfort food, making it a particularly fun stop for families and groups.
After breakfast or an early lunch, head to Dollywood.
Because you’ve already had a full Golden Hour day earlier in the trip, you don’t need to feel like you’re racing today.
Use this second park day to revisit your favorite rides, catch shows you missed, explore areas you rushed through on Day 2, and enjoy some of Dollywood’s incredible food.
This is also the perfect day to let everyone choose a few favorites.
Want to ride Lightning Rod again?
Go for it.
Want to spend an hour shopping?
Absolutely.
Want to sit down and listen to some live music?
Even better.
Simply Touring Tip: Two Dollywood days give you the freedom to enjoy the park instead of feeling like you have to check everything off a list.
Day 6: Pigeon Forge Adventure Day + Dinner Show
Now it’s time to spend a full day exploring Pigeon Forge.
For this itinerary, we’re choosing WonderWorks.
WonderWorks is a great choice if you’re traveling with kids because it combines interactive science exhibits, optical illusions, and hands-on attractions under one recognizable upside-down roof.
And because it’s indoors, it’s also a fantastic option if the weather isn’t cooperating.
After WonderWorks, take some time exploring the Pigeon Forge Parkway.
And here’s another stop I wouldn’t skip: Three Bears General Store.
This is one of those classic Pigeon Forge stops that is worth experiencing at least once. It’s enormous, packed with souvenirs, gifts, candy, and plenty to look at.
Give yourself more time than you think you’ll need.
Then it’s time for dinner, and this is where you have some choices.
Pick Your Pigeon Forge Dinner Show
You really can’t go wrong with one of the classic Pigeon Forge dinner shows.
Pirates Voyage Dinner & Show
If your family loves pirates, adventure, and a little friendly competition, Pirates Voyage remains a fantastic choice.
Dolly Parton’s Stampede
For horses, music, comedy, competition, and a hearty four-course meal, Stampede is a Smoky Mountain classic.
Hatfield & McCoy Dinner Feud
If your family loves comedy, music, and plenty of audience participation, Hatfield & McCoy is another great option.
Choose the show that best fits your family.
And don’t forget to make reservations ahead of time during busy busy seasons.
After the show, head back to HeartSong and enjoy one last relaxing evening at the resort. Check out the big fire pit outside of the resort! It is the perfect way to end your evening.
Day 7: One More Smoky Mountain Morning & Home
Unfortunately, vacation has to end.
But don’t rush this morning.
Enjoy one last breakfast at HeartSong, take a final walk around the resort, and give yourself time to pack without the frantic “Where did everyone put their shoes?” vacation-morning scramble.
If you have time before heading home, you can make one final stop in Pigeon Forge for souvenirs or grab one last Smoky Mountain treat. We love visiting Ogle’s General Store and Cruze Farm’s Ice Cream on the way out of town.
And then it’s time to head home.
But here’s the thing about a Smoky Mountain vacation:
You probably won’t leave feeling like you’ve done everything.
That’s okay.
You never will.
There will always be another Dollywood ride to experience, another restaurant to try, another shop to explore, and another mountain view waiting for you.
